In short

The announcement. John, in the book of Revelation, toward the end of the 1st century, sees, at the fourth seal, a pale horse ridden by “Death”, followed by Hades, who receive power over a fourth of the earth to kill by the sword, famine, disease and wild animals.

What happened. This has not happened yet. In the account, this scene follows the food crisis and comes before that of the martyrs of the fifth seal.

What is still debated. “a fourth of the earth” can mean a zone or a domain of authority, and does not necessarily mean that exactly a quarter of humanity must die.

Main objection (in French for now)

Ambiguïté à conserver : « le quart de la terre » peut désigner une portée géographique ou un domaine d’autorité. Ne pas le convertir automatiquement en « exactement 25 % de l’humanité doit mourir ».

The text (World English Bible)

When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the fourth living creature saying, “Come and see!” And behold, a pale horse, and the name of he who sat on it was Death. Hades followed with him. Authority over one fourth of the earth, to kill with the sword, with famine, with death, and by the wild animals of the earth was given to him.
