Step still to come (one reading among others)
Jerusalem, a Burdensome Stone for All Peoples (Zech 12:2-10)
? Not yet happened, no date
See the full entry: sources, objections, answersIn short
The announcement. The prophet Zechariah, in the book of Zechariah, around 520–480 BC according to tradition, announces that Jerusalem will be "a burdensome stone for all peoples": all the nations will gather against it, but God will protect it.
What happened. The text gives no date: it says only "in that day." Already fulfilled, in progress, or still to come? Readings differ: it is for you to judge.
What is still debated. other texts also announce nations gathered against Israel, in Ezekiel with Gog, and in Revelation at Armageddon. Nothing allows us to say whether it is one and the same event or several.
The text (World English Bible)
“Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of reeling to all the surrounding peoples, and it will also be on Judah in the siege against Jerusalem. It will happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all the peoples. All who burden themselves with it will be severely wounded, and all the nations of the earth will be gathered together against it.
Zech 12:2-3
In that day the LORD will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem. He who is feeble among them at that day will be like David, and David’s house will be like God, like the LORD’s angel before them. It will happen in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. I will pour on David’s house and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the spirit of grace and of supplication. They will look to me whom they have pierced; and they shall mourn for him as one mourns for his only son, and will grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for his firstborn.
