The announcement. Jesus, in the Gospel of Luke, around AD 30–33, announces that the inhabitants of Jerusalem will be led away captive among all the nations, and that the city will be ruled by other peoples “until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled”.
What happened. In 70, the historian Josephus counts 97,000 captives, then Jerusalem remains under non-Jewish rule for centuries. The State of Israel is proclaimed in 1948, and its army takes the Old City in 1967. The Temple esplanade, however, remains administered by an Islamic authority.
What is still debated. the phrase “until” gives neither a date nor a criterion, and seeing 1967 as the end of this period remains an interpretation.
Why it is striking
A 3rd-century manuscript of Luke already announces an end to this domination, when nothing suggested it. Seeing that end in 1967 remains a connection put forward by some readers, not an established fulfillment.
Main objection (in French for now)
Pour la dispersion de 70, Luc écrit probablement après l’événement et décrit ce qu’il sait.
The text (World English Bible)
They will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
