Announcement of the destruction of the Temple
Historical landmark: 30–70
See the full entry: sources, objections, answersIn short
The announcement. Jesus, in the Gospel of Matthew, announces that the Temple in Jerusalem will be destroyed so completely that “not one stone will be left on another”. His disciples then ask him when this will happen, and what will be the sign of his coming and of the end.
What happened. In 70, Jerusalem is destroyed and the second Temple disappears. The second question, about the end, remains open.
What is still debated. the text does not say where the answer about the destruction of the Temple stops and where the answer about the end of time begins.
Main objection (in French for now)
La manière exacte dont Jésus télescope les deux horizons reste une hipótesis : le texte ne dit pas où finit une question et où commence l’autre.
The text (World English Bible)
Jesus went out from the temple, and was going on his way. His disciples came to him to show him the buildings of the temple. But he answered them, “You see all of these things, don’t you? Most certainly I tell you, there will not be left here one stone on another, that will not be thrown down.” As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? What is the sign of your coming, and of the end of the age?”
