Step still to come (one reading among others)

Third seal — scales and food crisis

The rider of the black horse holds a pair of scales (Rev 6:5). Illumination from the Bamberg Apocalypse (c. 1000); a scene announced by the text, not one that has happened.

In short

The announcement. John, in the book of Revelation, toward the end of the 1st century, sees, at the third seal, a black horse whose rider holds a pair of scales, and hears enormous prices announced for wheat and barley, while the oil and the wine are to be spared.

What happened. This has not happened yet. In the account, this food crisis comes after peace is taken away and before the scene of death.

What is still debated. the text does not require all countries to suffer the same famine at the same time.

Main objection (in French for now)

Aucune exigence textuelle que chaque pays subisse simultanément la même famine.

The text (World English Bible)

When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature saying, “Come and see!” And behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a balance in his hand. I heard a voice in the middle of the four living creatures saying, “A choenix of wheat for a denarius, and three choenix of barley for a denarius! Don’t damage the oil and the wine!”

Rev 6:5-6
