Step still to come (one reading among others)

“Peace and safety!”, then sudden ruin (1 Thess 5:1-6)

"The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins" (Matt 25:1-13), watercolor after William Blake, c. 1826 (?) (Tate, London). Comparison: this parable of watchfulness before a sudden return, in the night, sheds light on the theme of 1 Thess 5:1-6 without being an illustration of it; Artist's impression.

In short

The announcement. The apostle Paul, in his first letter to the Thessalonians, around AD 50, announces that the day of the Lord will come "like a thief in the night": when people say "Peace and safety!", sudden destruction will surprise them.

What happened. Paul names no date, no country, and no peace agreement: he describes people who believe themselves to be safe. Jesus says the same thing with the days of Noah. Already fulfilled, under way, or still to come? Readings differ: it is for you to judge.

What is still debated. some readers today link these words to major peace agreements, in the Middle East in particular. But the text speaks of a state of mind among people in general, not of a specific agreement.

Main objection (in French for now)

Des lecteurs actuels rattachent ce verset aux grands accords de paix proclamés (au Proche-Orient notamment) ; le texte parle d’un état d’esprit des hommes en général, pas d’un accord précis.

The text (World English Bible)

But concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that anything be written to you. For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night. For when they are saying, “Peace and safety,” then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman. Then they will in no way escape. But you, brothers, aren’t in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief. You are all children of light and children of the day. We don’t belong to the night, nor to darkness, so then let’s not sleep, as the rest do, but let’s watch and be sober.
