Le 24 juin 2026, deux séismes de magnitude 7,2 puis 7,5, à environ 39 secondes d'intervalle, frappent le nord du Venezuela, le plus fort du pays depuis plus d'un siècle. Le bilan officiel est de 3 535 morts et 16 740 blessés au 6 juillet ; des chiffres officiels ultérieurs, non consolidés, dépassent 6 500 morts, et l'ONU évoquait jusqu'à 50 000 personnes portées disparues. Aucun bilan officiel n'a été publié depuis fin août.
Main objection (in French for now)
Le nombre de séismes de magnitude ≥ 7 reste stable d'année en année : la gravité du bilan tient surtout à l'exposition des constructions côtières, pas à une sismicité inédite.
