In late September and early October 2026, Catholic processions returned to the streets of Nicaragua after years of restrictions: Saint Jerome in Masaya (30 September), Saint Francis of Assisi in the El Riguero neighborhood of Managua (4 October), and others in León and Camoapa. No official text sets out the conditions; according to exiled researcher Martha Patricia Molina, citing church sources, they are only allowed when "supervised and co-organized" by town halls and the structures of the ruling party, and priests who have stayed in the country say that "everything remains the same" (Infobae, 6 October). According to Molina, 315 priests and religious are in exile. The NGO Christian Solidarity Worldwide recorded 309 cases of violations of freedom of religion in 2025, compared with 222 in 2024, affecting Catholics and Protestants alike, including the requirement for religious leaders to report to the police every week (report of 30 March 2026). On 2 October 2026, the Organization of American States called on Nicaragua to release political prisoners and restore civil liberties (Reuters).
Main objection (in French for now)
The repression has targeted all of civil society since 2018 (thousands of organizations dissolved), not faith as such: the Church is targeted mainly for its role as mediator in 2018.
The text (World English Bible)
Jesus answered them, “Be careful that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will lead many astray. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you aren’t troubled, for all this must happen, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there will be famines, plagues, and earthquakes in various places. But all these things are the beginning of birth pains.
Matt 24:4-8
It was given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. Authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation was given to him.
Rev 13:7
He will speak words against the Most High, and will wear out the saints of the Most High. He will plan to change the times and the law; and they will be given into his hand until a time and times and half a time.
Dan 7:25
