Entre le 24 juin et le 9 octobre 2026, cinq séismes de magnitude 7 ou plus frappent l'Amérique latine selon le catalogue de l'USGS : deux au Venezuela le 24 juin (7,2 et 7,5), au Mexique le 17 juillet (7,3, côte du Chiapas), en Colombie le 10 août (7,4) et au Panama le 9 octobre (7,7). Depuis 1900, une série d'au moins cinq séismes de cette force en 107 jours dans cette région n'était arrivée que quatre fois : en 1928, 1960, 1995 et 2010. La région en compte en moyenne 2,5 par an (1973-2025). À l'échelle du monde, en revanche, sept séismes de magnitude 7 ou plus en quatre mois sont courants (90 années sur 127 depuis 1900). Calcul fait par ce site à partir du catalogue de l'USGS ; la région et la durée ont été choisies après avoir vu la série, ce qui grossit l'impression de rareté.
