In October 2025, Chinese police arrested more than twenty members of Zion Church, one of the largest unregistered Protestant churches in Beijing (AFP). Its founding pastor, Ezra Jin Mingri, was released in July 2026, a few weeks after the US president raised his case with Xi Jinping, and now lives in the United States. Eight leaders, including Pastor Wang Cong, remain in detention in Beihai: they are being prosecuted for "fraud" and "illegal business operations"; the authorities accuse them over about 660000 yuan (98000 dollars) in offerings collected between 2019 and 2025. The trial, scheduled for mid-August 2026, has been postponed with no new date. According to ChinaAid, the prosecutors sent the case file to the court on July 17 without consulting the defense, and nine other members were released on bail in June. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that Beijing "manages religious affairs in accordance with the law."
