In short

The announcement. The apostle Paul, in his second letter to the Thessalonians, announces that after a great falling away from the faith, a “man of sin” will appear, will set himself above everything that is called God and will proclaim himself God.

What happened. This has not happened yet. According to Paul, the falling away comes first, then this man is revealed, and he is then destroyed by the Lord Jesus at his coming.

What is still debated. the idea that a system of evil could exist before the man who embodies it is a possible reading, not a statement of the text.
