Step still to come (one reading among others)
Hearts grown cold: the love of many will grow cold

The announcement. Jesus, in the Gospel of Matthew, announces that lawlessness, that is, contempt for God's law, will multiply, and that because of it the love of many will grow cold.
What happened. In the text, this happens amid persecution, betrayals and false prophets, before the good news is announced to all nations and the end comes. Jesus immediately adds a promise: “he who endures to the end will be saved.” Already fulfilled, under way, or still to come? Readings differ: you be the judge.
What is still debated. “many”, is that all of humanity, or first the believers the passage speaks of? And love growing cold can be seen in every age: on its own, it cannot date a stage.
Main objection (in French for now)
Le contexte parle de disciples livrés, qui se trahissent et se haïssent (Mt 24:9-10) : « le plus grand nombre » peut désigner d’abord la communauté des croyants plutôt que l’humanité entière. La portée exacte reste discutée.
The text (World English Bible)
Because iniquity will be multiplied, the love of many will grow cold.
Matt 24:12
