Step still to come (one reading among others)

Double causality: God brings Gog out, Gog devises his own plans

Stela of Esarhaddon (671 BC): two captives held by cords passed through their lips. It attests the image of the hooks in Ezek 38:4, nothing about Gog.

In short

The announcement. The prophet Ezekiel, in the book of Ezekiel, has God say that he will put “hooks into the jaws” of Gog to bring him out with his army, while also saying that Gog himself devises evil plans.

What happened. This has not happened yet. It is one aspect of the same attack by Gog against Israel, which the text places “in the latter days”, without a date.

What is still debated. some make the Antichrist the hidden manipulator of Gog, whereas the text gives this role to God alone and leaves Gog responsible for his own plans.

Main objection (in French for now)

Le texte n’exige aucun tiers acteur manipulant Gog. Faire de l’Antéchrist son manipulateur secret ajoute au texte un acteur qu’il n’a pas : Ézéchiel attribue ce rôle à Dieu.

The text (World English Bible)

I will turn you around, and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out, with all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed in full armor, a great company with buckler and shield, all of them handling swords;

Ezek 38:4

“‘The Lord GOD says: “It will happen in that day that things will come into your mind, and you will devise an evil plan.
