In short

The announcement. The prophet Daniel, in the book of Daniel, around 550 BC according to tradition, announces that after “two thousand three hundred evenings and mornings” the sanctuary will be cleansed. Some readers count these days as years.

What happened. In its context, the vision leads to the profanation of the Temple by Antiochus IV in 167 BC and its purification in 164. In 1825, the commentator Adam Clarke counted 2,300 years from Alexander's arrival in Asia and landed on 1966, or 1967 once the calculation is corrected. In 1967, Israel takes the Old City of Jerusalem, but no sanctuary is cleansed or restored.

What is still debated. the text speaks of evenings and mornings, not years, and with enough possible starting points, a calculation always ends up landing on a notable date.

Why it is striking

The calculation was printed 141 years before the event, with no adjustment after the fact. This connection is still put forward by some readers, without being an established fulfillment: the text says “evenings and mornings”, other starting points exist, and no sanctuary was cleansed in 1967.

Main objection (in French for now)

Le texte dit « 2300 soirs et matins », pas 2300 années. Le principe « un jour pour une année » vient de Nb 14:34 et Ez 4:6, pas de Daniel 8.

The text (World English Bible)

Then I heard a holy one speaking; and another holy one said to that certain one who spoke, “How long will the vision about the continual burnt offering, and the disobedience that makes desolate, to give both the sanctuary and the army to be trodden under foot be?” He said to me, “To two thousand and three hundred evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary will be cleansed.”

Dan 8:13-14
